Surendranath Banerjea was one of the great pioneers in the history of India's freedom movement. He is regarded as a great patriot, scholar, orator and statesman. As an educationist he devoted himself wholeheartedly to the cause of higher education in the country. In 1882 Surendranath Banerjea took over the charge of Presidency School. Early in 1884 this school was converted into Presidency Institution affiliated to I.A. standard and later in the same year into a degree college named as “Ripon College”. In 1885 Law Department was added and was converted into a separate college in 1911 named as Ripon Law College. In 1948-49 the Ripon College was renamed as “Surendranath College” after the name of the illustrious founder of the institution.

The Surendranath College started I.A. class with commerce subjects in the year 1939. In 1940 the college was affiliated to the B.Com. standard. The College then started I.A. (com.) and B.com. Classes in the day as well. In 1947 all the Commerce classes in the day and the evening including those held in the evening at the Ballygunge Branch were separated from the Arts and Science Departments and placed under a separate head who then enjoyed the status of Principal. The Secretary of the Surendranath college council applied on 6.7.60 for affiliation of the Surendranath college council applied on 6.7.60 for affiliation of the Surendranath College of Commerce as a separate college under the Surendranath College Trust and the University granted affiliation of the Surendranath College of Commerce from academic year 1961-62 vide University letter no. C/2551/164(Affl) dt. 15 th June, 1961.

In 1961 Surendranath College of Commerce was established and started admitting students from academic year 1961-62. In 1963 Surendranath College of commerce was changed (into Surendranath Evening College, following applications from Secretary and subsequent approval by the University of Calcutta and started admitting students for B.A and B.Sc courses.
The introduction of Computer Science, Electronic Science and especially Electronic Equipment Maintenance course (Vocational) at degree level from 1998-99 and Honours in Marketing in Commerce Stream offered from 2004-05 has been one further important step towards fulfilling the dream of “Surendranath Banerjea”. It is a matter of pride that Electronic Equipment Maintenance course,a self finance vocational course was introduced in 1998 in this college for the first time in the whole Eastern Region of India. Besides an Honours course in Electronic Science has also been started in the college from 2001-02. Some new Honours courses ( i.e. Honours in English , Hindi, Urdu)has been started from the session 2006-07.
Surendranath Evening College presently situated at 24/2, Mahatma Gandhi Road, Kolkata-700 009 is a co-educational college. The college admits pupils of all castes, creed and religion and imparts integrated education to them through the medium of Bengal and English under the syllabi of the University of Calcutta.
Our college is recognized by the UGC u/s 2(f) and affiliated to the University of Calcutta since inception. Our college is presently being governed by the democratically constituted Governing Body.
SNEC is one of the oldest and most important evening colleges in the eastern region of India having sixteen departments offering dynamic subjects of study. Our college is also thinking for offering some market-demand oriented courses in the years to come subject to the approval from the appropriate authorities. Our college has been imparting education for all level of students in our society with a particular focus to the downtrodden and with a specific focus to the pupils who belong to the “have nots”.
Our college maintains a number of committees, sub-committees to look after the various aspects regarding the day-to-day affairs and students' grievances. The committees and sub-committees with all sincerity perform all delegated responsibilities squarely in a democratic style of management. Our college earnestly organises all cultural activities through which students get opportunity to cultivate their talents.
